Finding the Best DSLR Camera

The Best Digital SLR Camera has to be chosen by class and can change over time as new contenders come along. In considering contenders for the “best DSLR” I skip over the entry level cameras, except for the exceptional Consumer cameras listed below.  It does not detract from the quality and range of functions you get with the entry level models.  The cameras listed below simply stand out because they are each a notch or two above the rest for one reason or another.

Read the individual reviews to see the full picture.  I only include a few lines below each to highlight the strongest standout features.

The best DSLR’s as at July 2011 has to be among the following:

Contenders for the Best Consumer DSLR Cameras are:

Canon Rebel EOS T2i (550d) – Considered the best Consumer DSLR in 2010.

The Canon T2i features a new level of sophistication to HD video capability and Back Panel LCD.

Canon Rebel EOS T3i (600d) – A baby 60D, disappointed the reviewers but loved by the consumers. It has all the sophistication of the T2i (550D) along with a vari-angle back panel found in the 60D.

Nikon D5100 – A fierce contender for best consumer DSLR in 2011.  Nikon announced the D5100 with updated Video capability and a Flexible back LCD in response to the popularity of the vari-angle technology.

Contenders for the best Prosumer DSLR Cameras are:

Canon EOS 60D – A contender for the best Prosumer DSLR in 2010. A semi-pro camera, rugged and fast, but light and sporting Canon’s Vari-angle LCD

Nikon D7000 or Canon 7D – Tossup, for the more serious prosumer with a serious budget.  The brand choice lies in your previous investment.  If you are a new DSLR investor, follow your heart, but read this review to make the right lens choices.

The Best Professional DSLR Cameras are:

Without a doubt, professionals will opt for either the:

Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III 21.1MP DSLR

or the

Nikon D3X 24.5MP FX DSLR Camera

The debates will rage about which is the “best”, but it will be a purely partisan debate.  These are great cameras used by the successful pros who are prepared to carry the heavy load and fork out the big bucks for very rugged and very fast FPS cameras with large and expensive lenses to do them justice.

The Best or top Waterproof Cameras

With waterproof cameras becoming affordable, even cheap, they have become the camera of choice for many.  They are rugged, weather proof, childproof and can record experiences from deep under water to high in the alps.

Their popularity has created a large market that is being targeted by almost all major digital camera manufacturers.  We regularly update this site to review and compare the best waterproof digital cameras to select the contender for the top waterproof camera.

Here is our list of the top waterproof digital cameras in 2011. (The order here is random)

Canon Powershot D10 Waterproof Digital CameraCanon PowerShot D10 12.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera

Users rave about the Canon Powershot D10 Waterproof Digital Camera. The Canon TS3 was released in 2009 as Canon’s first digital underwater camera. It has remained a very popular choice among consumers.  It is small, light, reliable, rugged, easy to use and produces excellent shots.

Panasonic Lumix TS3- Waterproof compact digital cameraPanasonic‘s Lumix DMC-TS3 Digital Camera – another top waterproof camera. Rugged and weather proof.

The Panasonic‘s Lumix DMC-TS3 Digital Camera was released in 2010 and proved to be a good good all rounder and includes full HD movie features.

Sony Cybershot waterproof Camera DSC-TX10

Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-TX10 16.2 MP Waterproof Digital Camera

Rugged and Stylish with a touch screen – This camera is just as much at home in the water as on a night on the town! The sleek and stylish TX10 fits the slimmest pocket or purse, yet is waterproof to a depth of 16 ft, shockproof  up to approximately 5 ft and dustproof..

Good waterproof Cameras that I decided not to include in the top waterproof camera list.

Pentax Optio WG-1 waterproof cameraPentax Optio WG-1 Adventure Series 14 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 5x Wide-Angle Optical Zoom (Black)

The ergonomics of the Pentax Optio WG-1 are appealing, with the centre lens position and sure grip shape.  The main negatives with the WG-1 is the mediocre picture quality compared to equivalent models.  See user reviews here.

Panasonic Lumix TS2 Waterproof CameraPanasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 14.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 4.6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom with 2.7-Inch LCD (Silver)

A step up from the DMC-TS2 and at twice the price, this camera still got great user reviews but it has been discontinued!   Limited quantities are still available in store…  Click here to order from Amazon.

May 31, 2011

The Canon EOS 60D – The Crown Prince of DSLR’s The Canon EOS 60D is a joy to review. It is for me one of the stand-out DSLR cameras of the decade.  The 60D is in a class above the entry level Rebels while still managing to maintain a respectably easy weight to carry around.  It [...]
